PART ONE: Embracing Change | Mastering Adaptability
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man I put the ways of childhood behind me.
1 Corinthians 13:11 NIV
Do you remember the time you hit puberty? Do you remember what that experience was like? Was it almost as if you woke up one day and boom! Your biggest concern were the two giant pimples bulging out of your forehead and causing you to question your beauty and self worth? Well my fellow young adult, just as it was when you hit puberty, so it is now that you are transitioning or have already transitioned into adulthood- you're going through changes. Wild!
There is a switch that happens when one transitions from childhood/teenagehood to adulthood. The experience is different for everyone. For some, becoming an adult means going away to University while to others, it means getting a job and gaining financial independence. Regardless of what it means to you personally, becoming an adult calls for you to begin adapting to the new stage of life that you have been ushered into. This episode's theme bible verse dipicts just that- adapting to change.
With adulthood comes the need for you to learn a new way of functioning. One of the ways in which you can adapt to adulthood is by re-evaluating your priorities. When you were a child, you talked like a child, you thought like a child, you reasoned like a child. But now that you're an adult, you ought to put the ways of your childhood behind you. Therefore, you need to reassess what you're putting your time and energy into.This is a call for you to re-evalute your priorities in life.
Maybe it was okay for you to spend every other weekend partying the entire weekend away when you were younger. You may have gotten away with spending money recklessly or even eating unheathy food. Perhaps you've been dating just about any guy or girl that shows interest in you just for the fun of it. But now that you're grown, it is time for you to put all those childish ways behind you. All this goes to say that there's need for you to make some major changes in order for you to function accordingly in this new season of your life. Making, maintaining and also coping with those changes, needless to say, will not always be easy. This is mainly because the road is unfamiliar. This is your first time walking down the road of adulthood so navigating through it is most certainly not easy. You may be faced with circumstances that are unpresidented. You may suddenly be faced with financial obligations that you didn't have before. You may have to take the role of being a primary caregiver of a sickly loved one. And because all of these changes can come as a surprise to you, grappling with them can be quite overwhelming.
Change, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. When the change is unpleasant, however, it can make us feel like we've lost our sense of control in the affected area of our lives. Letting go of control is a crucial part of embracing change. Quite frankly, you are not in control of most of the things that happen to you and in your life. Learn to be okay with that. It is also helpful to trust in God through the difficult changes of life. Even though your circumstances may have come as a shock to you, they are no surprise to God. The Bible says in Isaiah 46:10;
"I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please."
Take heart! The challenges that you're faced with did not come as a surprise to Almighty God. He knows the end from the beginning. And the best part is, God has your problems all figured out for you. You don't have to worry. You don't have to stress yourself about it. Just relax, Jehovah is in control. His purpose will stand. All things are working for your good. Wait on Him. And while you wait on Him, do what you can. Start a business if you need to. Job hunt if you must. Study for that school test. Use the resources that God has generously made available to you and watch Him bless your hard work.
I hope to see you back here.
